What is Tui Na?
Tui Na (Twee Nar) is a therapeutic manipulative massage, it is also referred to as Chinese Medical Massage. It is a 3000 year old system that originated in China, and is part of traditional Chinese medicine. Considered to be of equal significance and potency as acupuncture or herbal treatment. Tui Na massage uses pressure as well as movement. There are many different styles of Tui Na, some are deep and vigorous, some are gentle and subtle. Although Tui Na can be used for general relaxation, it is primarily used to treat specific problems such as: Back pain, Sciatica, Neck/Shoulder/Elbow/Knee pain, Arthritis, Sports injuries, Stress and Fatigue, Headaches and Migraines, Insomnia, Cold hands and feet, Muscle relaxation, Poor Blood circulation, Lymphatic stagnation, Digestive disorders and more.
The therapist uses their fingers, hands, forearm, elbow, knee or even the foot to apply Tui Na techniques such as kneading, rolling, stretching etc. A blend of rhythmic manipulation and soft tissue pressure is also applied to acupuncture points. This creates harmony within the body by removing stagnant and blocked energy.
As Tui Na is a medical treatment, the practitioner will in all cases take a full case history including questions about the general health of the patient prior to treatment. Tui Na is used widely in hospitals in China where they treat conditions that would be treated normally in the west by Osteopaths, Chiropractors, Physiotherapists or Drugs. Tui Na is performed over loose clothing on a massage bed or chair.
Most who seek Tui Na as a therapeutic manipulative massage will feel either relaxed or energised after a treatment.
